Should you see this movie?

During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, an American sports team must adapt to a live broadcast of Israeli athletes being held hostage by a terrorist group. I won’t call it a spoiler because the only spoilers will be about events related to the hostage crisis that you may already know. Yes. Can Paramount market this movie? No. This movie is set around the terrorist attack at the 1972 Olympics, but it’s actually about an ABC sports team suddenly tasked with providing live coverage of the attack.

Unlike other recent films (eg

We see everything from the crew’s perspective. Late Night With The Devil), this one isn’t presented as found footage, but rather a dramatization of the events. Thus, the production doesn’t resort to a shaky cam, but instead uses the “state-of-the-art” technology available at the time. Most of the action takes place behind the scenes, so you don’t know the people or their names. Jim McKay is the main face of the coverage, and viewers old enough to have watched sports since then will recognize him. Peter Jennings is the only news anchor, not a sports reporter, and he comes across as a refreshingly badass.

The crew faces a lot of challenges in getting the news out

Howard Cosell delivers a voiceover, and that’s the end of the people you know. I want to give props to the mix of new and archival video and audio. I assume some sort of archive was used, but it’s completely seamless, so I’m not sure (and the credits were rolling too fast). A lot of them have to do with the technology of the time (which will sound boring if I describe it, but it’s presented in an engaging way). But there are also ethical issues that news crews aren’t supposed to discuss. For example: Should they broadcast live video from the scene of an attack when it could result in someone being killed?

It seems unfair to the Germans of the time

The film covers a period of about 24 hours and only tells us what the crew knows. This leaves us with some uncertainties, most notably: was it Black September; and what really happened in the fog of war scene at the airport. This subsequent question is a little unsettling, as we get the impression that once the terrorists and hostages were out of the Olympic village, the German police may have been less concerned with protecting the hostages. . Before the action begins, we get a few opening scenes where we meet the characters and see them reporting on sports. I was surprised to see an admission here of the injection of politics into sports broadcasts – both in fueling Cold War rivalries and in terms of lingering grievances from World War II.

It just works

As the action got going, I was surprised by how often I was pushed to the edge of my seat. The film is absolutely gripping. It works like a time capsule. It works like a behind-the-scenes reveal. It works like a terrorism story.
