Ted Danson plays an eight-year-old widower (Charles) who struggles to establish a new routine after his wife dies of dementia-related health problems. Using a series of classic sitcom plots, Charles gets a job as an undercover detective at a residential facility (formerly known as a “nursing home”) to solve a jewelry theft. His boss, Lilah Richcreek Estrada as Julia, is a black-and-white, can-do, sarcastic nod to Danson’s kind-hearted and chaste Charles.
They’re also deadpan in their jokes and commentary on the lifestyle and events going on there
The two quickly fall out with the director’s subject (well played by Stephanie Beatriz as Diddy), Charles’ daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), and the various wards and their many silly problems. There are some poorly conceived antics aimed at the elderly women’s antics that don’t fit the rest of the story, and the relentless disrespect (and interchangeability) of Charles’ daughter’s three teenage sons is distracting and off-putting. The best parts are Charles’ slow immersion in his new community, with some social interactions with the other residents, especially Caleb, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson.
The awkward banter between Charles and the boss, Julia, is hilarious
And while daughter Emily’s family life isn’t as interesting, it does make for some great scenes between her and Charles in later episodes. The conclusion isn’t hard to figure out (who stole what and what happens to Charles), but the sentimental parts of Charles’s awakening and his wife’s death are worth the effort. There are a few small roles played by older stars (Sally Struthers, Veronica Cartwright) that might bring a smile to older viewers, but they’re mostly wasted on nonsense about old men and sex.
Overall, I recommend it, especially for viewers in their forties and older
